TURKEY EXPORTS 30 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF SEA CUCUMBERS…

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Bekir Pakdemirli said that hunting season of sea cucumber which is one of the most important seafood export products has ended.

Minister Pakdemirli stated that the hunting season of sea cucumbers, which started on 1 January, fed by filtering sand and mud on the sea floor and is important for the marine ecosystem, has ended on 1 June.

Indicating that sea cucumber grows in Turkey’s clean sea waters as healthy and quality, Pakdemirli noted, “This product is especially important to the Chinese kitchen and used not for domestic consumption. Sea cucumber hunting is made particularly in Dikili, Ayvalık and Çeşme districts.”

Poaching finished by efficient inspection…

Expressing the increase in poaching due to foreign demand, Pakdemirli added that they brought a quota system and finished poaching in the past years thanks to the effective supervision they carried out with the Coast Guard Command and the sea police.

Minister Pakdemirli explained that they have allowed a total of 2500 tons of sea cucumber fishing for 230 fishing vessels within the scope of the quota.

“Hunting season ended on June 1 and 2084 tons of trepang, which were hunted, were processed in factories and exported to Far East countries, primarily China and South Korea. Meanwhile Turkey annually exports 30 million dollars worth of sea cucumbers.”
