Press release…

Ufuk Atakan Demir, Member of the Board of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association and Chairman of the Izmir Fishery Producers Association, said that fish consumption has increased as the coronavirus has changed our lives and nutritional awareness.

“This reflected very positively on our sector and we reached our 2023 targets 2 years ago. There is a total production of 178 million tonnes of aquaculture in the world. 90 million tonnes of hunting and 88 million tonnes of aquaculture. While aquaculture was 32 million tonnes 20 years ago, it reached 88 million tonnes. According to TUIK data in 2021, 470 thousand tonnes of 800 thousand tonnes of production consists of aquaculture and 330 thousand tonnes of hunting. Breeding reached the level of 60 percent in Türkiye,” Demir said.

Pointing out that the aquaculture sector is strong in production, Demir added, “We have surpassed Greece in production and exports. Last year, we realized the highest export in the history of the Republic with an export of 1.4 billion dollars. Seabass was in first place, sea bream was in second place. Turkish salmon caught an incredible opportunity and we have reached 36 thousand tonnes of export in the last 5 years. In 10 months, we achieved an export of 260 million dollars in salmon.”

“We want to increase production and strengthen our exports. Our 2023 target is 2 billion dollars. We export to 106 countries. After the tension between Russia and Ukraine, our exports, especially salmon, have grown a lot. We make 55 percent of our exports to EU countries. We focused on our sustainability projects. We produce very efficiently with very few resources in aquaculture too. We are a healthy growing sector, our production and exports will tend to boost in the coming period as a healthy nutrition awareness,” he concluded…
