In Alanya district of Antalya peovince, both the number of producers and the production area for tropical fruits have soared significantly in the last 10 years.

In Alanya, one of Türkiye’s important agricultural centres, experience in vegetable production is being transferred to tropical fruit production and nearly 40 types of tropical fruits are grown in the district.
According to Farmer Registration System (ÇKS) data and field studies, the number of tropical fruit producers, which was 859 in 2016, surged to 2,227 in 2016. The number of producers surged by 159 percent in the last 10 years.
The production area also rose by 95 percent during this period, from 19,282 decares to 37,605 decares.
Some producers in the district cultivate more than one type of tropical fruit. Avocado is grown by 1776 producers on 24,000 decares of land, banana by 454 producers on 12,000 decares, mango by 36 producers on 403 decares, passion fruit by 13 producers on 204 decares and dragon fruit by 9 producers on 75 decares.

Ali Hüddoğlu, Head of the Alanya Tropical Fruit Producers Association, told an Anatolian Agency (AA) reporter that tropical fruit cultivation, which started as a hobby about 30 years ago in the district, has transformed into a commercial sector in the last 10 years.
Hüddoğlu stated that Alanya region’s openness to innovation has been effective in the development of production and that tropical fruit production is becoming increasingly widespread in the district.
Hüddoğlu also mentioned that in addition to the production reflected in official data, there are also small gardens, residential complex gardens and similar areas where tropical fruits are grown for personal needs.
Hüddoğlu stated that awareness of tropical fruits has enhanced through collaborations with Alanya Municipality and landscape architects and that saplings of products such as avocado, mango, papaya, passion fruit, and dragon fruit are now being used in newly constructed residential gardens and parks.
Expressing his expectation that the share of tropical fruit varieties in the district’s agricultural production will further increase in the coming years, Hüddoğlu said, “Today, out of nearly 40 types of tropical fruits produced in Alanya, 20 have reached a level that can meet the needs of our country.”
