Izmir, most producing milk centre in Türkiye!

Izmir, Türkiye’s leading province in milk production, aims to boost its milk production to 2 million tonnes in 2027 with its disease-free and European Union (EU) approved enterprises.

In Türkiye, where approximately 22 million tonnes of milk is produced annually, İzmir ranks first with its production of around 1 million 730 thousand tonnes.

There are 473 thousand 587 milking bovine and ovine animals in 29 thousand 500 enterprises throughout the province. In Izmir region, which attracts attention with its high quality milk, most of the production is made up of “Class A” milk with at least 3.6 per cent fat and 3.2 percent protein.

Izmir, one of the leading provinces in terms of disease-free and EU-approved farms, has maintained its first place in milk production for 3 years with the increase in the number of these enterprises. All of the milk is transported to industry through the cold chain system.

Izmir is expected to produce 1 million 770 thousand tonnes of milk this year…

“Increasing the number of purified animals (disease-free) is important for us”

Mustafa Şahin, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, said that all of the milk in Izmir is transformed into value-added products.

Noting that high technology and automation systems are used in the majority of dairy farms, Şahin said, “The fact that all milk industrialists buy milk from this region is related to the quality of the milking cell and the feeding quality of the animal. Izmir’s climatic conditions are also very good in milk production. All of our enterprises in Izmir are open enterprises.”

Drawing attention to the high fat content of milk in disease-free and EU-approved enterprises, Şahin explained, “Izmir is the capital of milk production in the country. We think that it will continue its current first place in production in the coming years with its disease-free and EU-approved enterprises. It is important for us to surge the number of pure enterprises and EU-approved enterprises in our province, as well as to surge the number of pure animals in the enterprise. Milk production in Izmir will reach 1.8 million tonnes in 2026 and 1.95 million tonnes in the following year. During the labour season, when milk increases, there is abundance.”

“For this, our Ministry takes all necessary measures and we regulate milk. We take the unmarketable milk in the hands of our producers and turn it into milk powder through the Meat and Milk Institution and prevent the loss of our producers,” Şahin added…
