Hazelnut, which grows on 5,500 decares in the Hizan district of Bitlis province and is among the important livelihoods of the region, has started to be harvested.
Hazelnut harvest has started in Bitlis (an Eastern Anatolia province of Turkey). Harvest in nine villages of Hizan is done on a total area of 5,500 decares.
Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Rıfat Çelik, while talking about the characteristics of hazelnut, said, “This year’s hazelnut yield is quite good. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recently announced the base price of hazelnut as 27 liras. There are 9 types of hazelnuts in the region. There are varieties with good smell, taste, oil and aroma due to the climate. They have an incredible demand in the market.”
Rıfat Çelik added, “Our hazelnuts produced in the region are above the average of Turkey. The hazelnuts produced in the region will be consumed in domestic market around 30-32 liras. We think that the hazelnuts obtained will provide an added value of approximately 21 million liras to our 9 villages. Besides about 1200 people, male and female, work in these areas. The harvest will end in about 15 days.”
