In a statement to an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent, Gönen said that Türkiye ranks among the leading countries in agriculture and in particular, vegetable production.

Indicating that Türkiye also stands out globally in tomato production, Gönen said, “Türkiye ranks among the world’s top five tomato suppliers.”

Explaining that the seed industry has undergone significant changes since the 1980s, Gönen said, “Through the steps the country has taken during this period, it has become a major player in the global seed sector.”

Recalling that Türkiye hosted the International Seed Federation’s World Seed Congress in Istanbul last year, Gönen said that this year the Asia-Pacific Seed Association’s (APSA) ‘International Asian Seed Congress’ (ASC 2026) would also be held in the country.

“Türkiye’s strategy towards Asia-Pacific countries aligns with its agricultural and seed sector activities, our relations with APSA began during the COVID-19 pandemic and have since grown steadily stronger.”

“APSA comprises a large number of seed companies across Asia-Pacific countries, along with both the Turkish Seed Industry Association (TÜRKTED) and the Turkish Seed Growers’ Association (TÜRKTOB) are members of APSA,” he noted.

Gönen also emphasized that ASC 2026 is a significant outcome of Türkiye’s efforts targeting the Asia-Pacific market.

Pointing out that national seed production is very important, but when you look at seed companies, they do not operate by targeting only their home country, he added, “We have many seed companies operating internationally. Consequently, they engage in both imports and exports. Our aim in approaching the Asian market is to increase the commercial scale of the seed sector and to foster closer collaboration between companies. It is about both attracting those companies here and charting a new roadmap for us to go there. What matters is mutual trade.”
