1st MEDITERRANEAN AGROECOLOGY CONGRESS
SCIENCE, PRACTICE, MOVEMENT
Agrigento 9-12 June 2025…
The 1st Mediterranean Agroecology Congress, AEMED, officially started. It will be held in Agrigento (Sicily) from June 9 to 12, 2025 at the Palacongressi of Agrigento, the Italian Capital of Culture 2025. The Congress is promoted by the Agroecology Sicily Coordination, in collaboration with AIDA (Italian Association of Agroecology) and AIAF (Italian Association of Agroforestry), under the patronage of Agroecology, in order to facilitate the important dialogue between the Mediterranean Agroecology Congress and the Agroecology Europe Forum, which will be held in Malmö from October 2 to 4, 2025.
The event represents a unique opportunity to share knowledge, discuss key issues and build strategic collaborations in the field of agroecology and regeneration.

This is an International Congress with many participants and publications (250), coming not only from 23 Mediterranean countries, but also from United States, South America and Asia.
During the presentation of the event, Guido Bissanti, President of the Agroecology Coordination of Sicily, stated: “This will undoubtedly be a scientific event, but also an interaction between science, practice and movement. Therefore, farmers, citizens’ movements and scientists will participate in a new connection. Which connection? The hyper-connected network of Nature teaches it to us. A network that gives us codes to understand in what ways the society of the future will be different. A future where the real concept of sustainability will be really meaningful in the so-called integral ecology. We will truly understand what conservation and respect of the nature mean. A new holistic concept and an opportunity to narrate and rediscover the territory, through the ancient connection between man and nature, taking into account recent scientific findings”.

Three thematic days on the topic (June 9, 10, and 12) and a special day of farm visits (June 11), during which farmers will directly illustrate their practices and results in the field. Based on the experience gained by the Agroecology Coordination of Sicily (promoter of Regional Law 21 of July 29, 2021, on agroecology) the congress aims to develop three key documents during the final day. Through a participatory process and round tables, guidelines and directives will be defined for the following areas:
Scientific: to guide research towards the real needs of agroecology in the Mediterranean.
Technical: to promote innovative solutions and practices applicable to Mediterranean agricultural entities.
Political: to offer guidelines and proposals for public policies aimed at the development of agroecology.
The themes of AEMED 2025:
Biodiversity and resilient agricultural and food systems.
Agroecology and climate change mitigation.
Sustainable food systems and social justice.
Technological innovation in agroecology and agroforestry.
This is an epochal change that starts from Sicily, which is the first region in Europe to have a specific law on agroecology and the leader in the process of agroecological transition in the Mediterranean area, connecting the good practices of the past with new scientific techniques that look to the future.
The 1st International Congress on Mediterranean Agroecology, in the beautiful setting of the Valle dei Templi (Valley of Temples), will be enhanced by an exhibition/communication pavilion, the Agroecology Open Space, which will focus on the principles of Science, Movement and Practice of agroecology, using an innovative approach that will integrate art and storytelling to make the experience even more engaging and accessible and to narrate the ancient connection between man and nature. This will be a fundamental moment to build a common and sustainable vision for Mediterranean agriculture, enhancing the resources and cultural heritage of a territory rich in history and biodiversity.
