According to a compilation by an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent from data provided by the Ministry of Trade, the licensed warehousing system ensures the preservation and trade of products that can be stored for long periods, such as cereals, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, hazelnuts, olives, dried apricots, pistachios, dairy products and raisins.

In this context, the spike in licensed warehouse capacity over the years is noteworthy; the capacity, which was 8.3 million tonnes in 2021, rose to 8.9 million tonnes in 2022, 10.1 million tonnes in 2023 and 12.2 million tonnes in 2024. The capacity of these warehouses exceeded 14.2 million tonnes by the end of last year. Thus, this capacity soared by approximately 71 percent in the 2021-2025 period.

Trading of the products included in the system is carried out on the Turkish Mercantile Exchange through electronic product certificates issued by licensed warehouse operators representing the ownership of the product.

“Two-dimensional inspection and monitoring system for licensed warehouses”

Turkish Mercantile Exchange General Manager Ali Kırali told an Anatolian Agency (AA) reporter that they have reached a transaction volume of 392 billion Turkish Liras since 2019. Stating that they aim for a transaction volume of 168 billion Turkish Liras by the end of 2026, Kırali said, “We achieved a transaction volume of approximately 20 billion Turkish Lira in the first two months; we have made a good start to the year.”

Pointing to the capacity of licensed warehouses, Kırali underlined that more than one-third of Türkiye’s grain harvest can now be stored in licensed warehouses.

Emphasizing that they have achieved rapid growth in the sector with incentives that will serve as an example to the world, he added, “We will continue to grow from here, but we are entering a few years where we will increase supervision and control. Because, in a rapidly growing sector, there are bound to be some problems. We are trying to introduce a new two-dimensional inspection and supervision system for licensed warehouses, working together with our Ministry of Trade and the Turkish Grain Board (TMO).”
