Şemsi Bayraktar: Eid al-Adha economy surpasses 4 billion dollars!

Eid al-Adha economy: 192 billion liras (4.3 billion dollars)

Şemsi Bayraktar, Chair of the Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), announced that 3.3 million animals are expected to be slaughtered during Eid al-Adha.

Pointing out that compared to last year, price hikes amounted to 36.9 percent for cattle and 29.3 percent for sheep and goats, Bayraktar said, “It is estimated that expenditure on sacrificial animals will reach 192 billion liras.”

Şemsi Bayraktar, while assessing the prices of sacrificial animals ahead of the approaching Eid al-Adha, reminded that Eid al-Adha holds great significance not only for its religious and cultural dimensions but also for the national economy and in particular, the livestock sector.

“The buying and selling of sacrificial animals brings with it a vast range of commercial activity, from the feed industry to veterinary services, from transport to market stall rentals and from slaughtering services to the leather and offal economy. This process generates a significant economic volume within the national economy,” Bayraktar explained.

Taking into account sacrificial sales data from recent years, it is estimated that in 2026, a total of 3.3 million sacrificial animals will be slaughtered, comprising approximately 750,000 cattle and 2.55 million sheep and goats.

The economic value of sacrificial animals…

Assuming the live weight price per kilogram of a large livestock animal, which has an average live weight of 400 kilograms, is 411 lira 19 kurush, it is estimated that the total amount to be paid for the approximately 750,000 large livestock animals to be slaughtered during the “Qurban Bayram” will reach 123 billion 357 million liras.

As for small livestock, assuming an average selling price of 26,900 liras, the total amount to be paid for approximately 2.55 million small livestock is projected to reach 68 billion 595 million liras. Accordingly, it is estimated that the public will spend a total of nearly 192 billion liras (4.3 billion liras) on approximately 3.3 million sacrificial animals…
