Mehmet Ali Işık: The decline in raisin harvest will continue in the 2025/26 season

Press release…

Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, stated that Türkiye’s investment in viticulture has resulted in a production capacity of 1.2 million decares of seedless sultana grapes in the Manisa-Denizli-İzmir triangle.

Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, said that significant increases in yield have been achieved and that the region has gained the capacity to produce 330,000 tonnes of seedless dried grapes and export 250-260,000 tonnes. He also emphasised that the effects of the global climate crisis have been felt very strongly in seedless dried grapes over the last three seasons.

Stating that the harvest of seedless raisins in the 2025/26 season is expected to be 40-50 per cent below the long-term average, Işık said, “We may lose our global leadership in seedless raisin production. Data from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) points to this danger. The increase in export prices has reached a level that threatens our exports. We have become 1,000 dollars per tonne more expensive compared to countries such as Iran, India and China. As Turkish exporters, we have fought for many years to rise to a leading position in world markets. In order to maintain our global leadership in exports and rise to global leadership in production once again, all components of the sector must come up with a new roadmap. We must take the necessary steps, primarily irrigation, spraying, and greenhouse production, to reduce the effects of the global climate crisis,” he said.

The country exported seedless raisins to 84 countries in the 2024/25 season, with the United Kingdom maintaining its top position with 169 million 304 thousand dollars.

The Netherlands ranked second with 64.3 million dollars, while Italy ranked third with 51 million dollars and then 48 million dollars worth of seedless raisins to Germany and 33 million dollars worth to France…
