Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Yumaklı announced that Türkiye Beekeeping Map has been updated with 2023 data and new geographically labelled honeys and provinces producing breeder queen bees have been added.
Yumaklı stated that Türkiye Beekeeping Map has been updated with 2023 data and said, “According to the 2023 TURKSTAT data, annual honey production in our country, which has 9.2 million hives, is 115 thousand tonnes and the average yield per hive is 12.5 kilograms. Our honey production, which was 74 thousand tonnes in 2002, surged by 54 percent to 115 thousand tonnes in 2023 as a result of the efforts of our Ministry, and the number of beehives, which was 4.1 million, increased by 122 percent to 9.2 million.”
Pointing out that Muğla, Ordu, Adana, Mersin and İzmir are among the provinces with the highest number of hives, Yumaklı noted, “The highest yield per hive is realised in Ordu province, followed by Adana, Çanakkale, Sivas and Kars. The highest honey production is made in Ordu, Adana, Muğla, Sivas and İzmir provinces. Muğla, Sivas, Antalya, İzmir and Ordu stand out as the provinces with the highest number of beekeeping enterprises.”
Emphasising that one of the updated data in the Türkiye Beekeeping Map is the number of honey forests, Yumaklı added, “Our number of honey forests, which was 750 in 2022, reached 796 in 2023. Accordingly, we have 796 honey forests covering an area of 95 thousand 283 hectares with a total capacity of 1 million 6 thousand 183 hives throughout our country.”
Minister Yumaklı also underlined that new honeys with geographical indication and provinces producing breeder queen bees were added to the Türkiye Beekeeping Map with the update made and concluded, “There are 29 registered honey varieties with geographical indication in our country, while 27 honeys are waiting to be registered at the application stage. Ardahan, Ankara, Çorum, Artvin, Muğla, Ordu, Ankara, İzmir, Mersin and Düzce provinces also produce breeder queen bees.”
