UN Report: More than 1 billion meals are wasted every day!

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Food Waste Index 2024 report revealed that while 783 million people grappled with hunger in 2022, more than 1 billion meals a day were wasted worldwide.

According to the Food Waste Index 2024 report published by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) on the occasion of the International Zero Waste Day on 30 March, 19 percent of the food produced worldwide in 2022 went to waste.

Think Eat Save…

According to the report, which reflects the developments towards the goal of halving global food waste, more than 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste was produced in 2022, equivalent to 132 kilograms per person and 1 in 5 of the food consumed worldwide. Of the total food wasted, 60 per cent was at the household level, 28 percent in food services and 12 percent in retail.

In 2022, when 783 million people are struggling with hunger and 1 in 3 of humanity is food insecure, more than 1 billion meals a day were wasted worldwide.

Food waste, which continues to damage the global economy and fuel climate change, nature loss and pollution, accounts for about 10 per cent of annual greenhouse gas emissions. This rate is about 5 times higher than that of the aviation industry. The waste costs about 1 trillion dollars!..
