Ümit Mirza Çavuşoğlu: Western Mediterranean region realises 39 percent of cherry exports

Last year, cherry exports carried out by the Western Mediterranean Exporters’ Association surged by 80.8 percent; 39 percent of Türkiy’s cherry exports were made from this region. It was also stated that Türkiye has an important potential in cherry production.

Last year, 39 percent of the country’s cherry exports were made from the Western Mediterranean region.

The Western Mediterranean Exporters’ Association (BAİB), which exported 850 million dollars worth of fresh vegetables and fruits last year, ranked third after tomatoes and peppers among the products it sold the most abroad.

Ümit Mirza Çavuşoğlu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BAİB, which covers Antalya, Isparta and Burdur provinces, said that Türkiye has an important potential in cherry production.

Indicating that around 650 thousand tonnes of cherries are produced annually throughout the country, Çavuşoğlu noted that the surplus in the domestic market is sent abroad.

Pointing out that approximately 80 thousand tonnes of cherries are exported, Çavuşoğlu said, “As a country, we had a good year in cherry exports. We have a serious increase.”

“As Türkiye, we achieved an increase of more than 60 per cent compared to the previous year. We reached 214 million dollars from 134 million dollars. Our region also achieved a serious hike above the country’s average,” Çavuşoğlu added…
