In Diyarbakir, where the watermelon harvest has begun, it is predicted that more than 150 thousand tonnes of yield will be obtained on an area of 30 thousand decares this year.
Harvest has started in the fields where 115,505 watermelon seedlings, which were distributed to the region’s farmers with a 75 percent grant, were brought together with the soil within the framework of the “Development and Dissemination of Watermelon Cultivation Project” by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Diyarbakır Governor Ali İhsan Su told reporters that the province has an important potential in every sector.
“Türkiye comes after China in watermelon production in the world.” Su said, adding that Diyarbakır is the province with the highest amount of watermelon production in the region.
Production area expanded, yield increased…
Noting that last year, 3 million 394 thousand tonnes of watermelon was produced on an area of 690 thousand decares in Türkiye and 112 thousand tonnes of watermelon was produced on an area of more than 27 thousand decares in the province last year, Su added that this year the production area expanded with the support and the yield increased.
