Turkish fishery exports up 65 percent to 1.7 billion dollars in 5 years!

The Turkish fishery sector, which has become one of the locomotive sectors of exports in Türkiye since the beginning of the 2000s, has ramped up its exports by 65 percent in the last 5 years, from 1 billion to 1.7 billion dollars.

Sinan Kızıltan, Chairman of the Sector Board of Turkish Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Associations, informed that Türkiye, which is Europe’s largest producer of sea bass and sea bream, exports aquaculture products to more than 100 countries and stated that they are the second in the world in trout production and that bluefin tuna caught in the international waters of the Mediterranean and off the coast of Malta are exported to Japan.

With the participation of 45 representatives from 17 different countries, the General Assembly of FEAP (Federation of European Aquaculture Producers) was held at Wyndham Grand Istanbul Levent Hotel in Istanbul on 23-24 May with the organisation of Aegean, Istanbul and Mediterranean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Associations.

Speaking on behalf of Türkiye at the meeting, Sinan Kızıltan, Chairman of the Sector Board, stated that Turkish entrepreneurs have brought the world the world’s most modern and integrated facilities in the aquaculture sector in the last 20-25 years and that they export sea bass, sea bream, trout, salmon and tuna fish fresh and chilled, frozen whole or filleted and also smoked.

“We obtained 517 million dollars from sea bass and 418 million dollars from sea bream”

“We are in a position to export our protein-rich aquaculture products produced in these facilities to more than 100 countries,” said Kızıltan, “Our exports of fisheries and aquaculture products reached 1.679 billion dollars in 2023. With the export volume of 1.02 billion dollars realised by the sector at the end of 2019, we were among the first sectors to reach the 2023 export targets and we passed the 1 billion dollar threshold for the first time. In 2023, we are proud of our exports of 1.6 billion dollars.”

“Our main export products are Mediterranean Sea Bass, Sea Bream, Turkish Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Bluefin Tuna and Rock Bass. While our sea bass exports are 517 million dollars, our sea bream exports are 418 million dollars, and Turkish salmon is the rising star of the Turkish seafood sector. Turkish Salmon showed a significant increase in production and exports, reaching a value of approximately 376 million dollars in 2023. Our trout exports amounted to 112 million dollars and tuna exports to 51 million dollars. 10 million dollars in foreign currency from rock sea bass,” Kızıltan added…
