The export revenue obtained from dried figs, defined as the fruit of paradise, in the 2020/21 season reached 158 million dollars with an increase of 2 percent.
Turkey, as known, is the world leader in the production and exports of dried figs. The country has experienced a pleasing development in the average export price. While all dried figs were exported for an average of 4 thousand 30 dollars per tonne in the 2019/20 season, they found customers for 4 thousand 245 dollars in the 2020/21 season.
According to the data of Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EİB), Turkey has managed to sell dried figs worth of 158 million dollars in the period of September 30 2020 and February 27, 2021. Turkey’s exports of dried figs, in the same period of 2019/20 season had been 155 million dollars.
Stating that in 2020/21 season, Turkey’s dried figs harvest estimated 85 thousand tonnes, Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association Chairperson Birol Celep said, “Although in 2019/20 season, we had a fall in 90 thousand tonnes of yield estimate, we have not experienced any decline in exports and we also achieved a 5 percent rise in the average export price on dollar basis.”
Defining dried figs as a “prestige product”, Celep noted, “Our Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry along with our exporters and producers join forces to export more value-added dried figs. There is an increase in commodity prices around the world. The World Health Organization has included dried figs on the list of healthy foods. Dried figs are one of the foodstuffs that strengthen the immune system in the human body during the pandemic period. The current conditions increase the demand for our dried figs and we expect the rise in export prices of dried figs to continue.”
Germany, France and USA demanded the most for dried figs…
Most demand for dried figs came from Germany in the period of new season until February 27, 2021 since September 30, 2020 and dried figs worth 24 million 163 thousand dollars were exported to Germany with an increase of 9 percent.
As for France, this country imported Turkish dried figs, which were 20 million 799 thousand dollars last season, soared by 8 percent to 22 million 522 thousand dollars.
As part of the TURQUALITY Project carried out by the Aegean Exporters’ Associations in the USA with the support of the Ministry of Trade, the Hybrid Tasting activity on dried fruit products has started to bear fruit.
Lastly dried figs exports to the USA rose by 19 percent in the 2020/21 season and went up from 15.9 million to 18.9 million dollars.
