The vast majority of table apricot production in the country is produced in Mut district. The open field harvest of the geographically marked Mut apricot has ended this year. In Mut, which has 712 thousand decares of agricultural land, the yield of apricot, which is produced on a total area of 79 thousand decares, was 200 thousand tonnes this year and exports were 100 thousand tonnes.
Zeki Cüce, Head of Mersin Metropolitan Mut Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Brokers’ Association, said that while the kilo of apricot was bought at 60 liras in early season, the kilo dropped to 10 to 20 liras afterwards, which caused a serious decrease in earnings in the producer.
Cüce also noted that last year, the fruit juice of the apricot, that is, the waste of the apricot, found buyers between 7 and 8 liras per kilo, while this year it did not find buyers even for 2 liras, leaving the hopes for next year…
