In Nevşehir province, one of the leading pumpkin seeds production centres across Turkey, “Nevşehir Pumpkin Seed” which has a registration of geographical indiacation, contributes about 500 million liras to regional economy.
Harvesting of the snack pumpkin seeds, unique to the Nevşehir region, known for their thin and long structure, continues.
This product, which is harvested an average of 18 thousand tons per year, also makes the producers smile. Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Okan Yılmaz told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the planting area of pumpkin seeds for snacks is increasing every year in the region and that the harvest of the crop planted in 220 thousand decares of land this year will continue until the end of the month.
Stating that the registration of the geographical sign last year, an important step was taken towards branding, Yılmaz said that the farmers started to show more interest in this crop.
Expressing that in pumpkin seed production Nevşehir will rise to a leading position as from next year, Yılmaz noted, “The most important feature of pumpkin seeds, as we call it ‘Yellow gold’ in Nevşehir, is its aroma unique to the region. A significant part of pumpkin seed production comes from Nevşehir and Kayseri provinces in Turkey. The price per kilogram of fresh pumpkin seeds is 30 TL on average.”
“Nevşehir Pumpkin Seed offers an added value of approximately 500 million liras to economy of the country and also the region. Its geographical sign was received last year. We plan to implement some facility deficiencies at the factory level by preparing projects. We will make Nevşehir’s registered product more recognizable,” Yılmaz added.
Cultivation area has increased 5 times in the last 5 years…
Mahmut Çalışkaner, President of Nevşehir Chamber of Agriculture, indicated that this product has become the main crop for local farmers due to its high yield.
Çalışkaner concluded, “The yield in pumpkin seeds is high this year. The cultivated area has increased by 60 thousand decares in the last five years. When we look at the production figures, Kayseri ranks first, but we will be the leader in a short time by encouraging our farmers.”
