Press release…
The tobacco and tobacco products sector, one of Türkiye’s traditional export sectors, aims to ramp up its exports from 922 million dollars in 2023 to over 1 billion dollars in 2024.
Having reached 50 million kilos of Turkish type oriental tobacco, 20 million kilos of Virginia type tobacco and 1 million kilos of burley type tobacco production in 2023, the Turkish tobacco sector took action to boost its production to 80 million kilos in 2024.
Ömer Celal Umur, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Tobacco Exporters’ Association, stated that they aim to export 1 billion dollars in line with the spike in tobacco production.
Answering the questions of the press members after the ordinary financial general assembly meeting of the Aegean Tobacco Exporters’ Association for 2023, Umur said, “Although the number of producers in the tobacco sector soared in 2023, the production figures did not rise at the expected rate because the weather conditions were not favourable.”
“If production peaks in 2024, we believe that we will reach the target of 1 billion dollars in our exports. In the first quarter of 2024, our exports rose by 4 per cent from 211 million dollars to 219 million dollars.”
