NATIONAL PULSE COUNCIL: WE HAVE SUFFICIENT STOCKS IN PULSES

Stating that there will be no shortage of stocks in the pulses sector thanks to the measures taken by the public institutions related to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Chair of the National Legumes Council Abdullah Özdemir said, “As long as there is no panic, there is nothing to be afraid of, our stocks are sufficient in pulses.”

Pointing out that the interest in food products with a long shelf life has increased due to the COVID-19 process and the Russia-Ukraine war, Chair of the National Legumes Council Abdullah Özdemir said that among the products with high demand, pulses stand out due to their nutritiveness and easy storage conditions along with durum and bread wheat are the most important raw materials on the agenda.

Informing that Turkiye produced 17 million 650 thousand tonnes of wheat last year despite the drought, Özdemir explained “With all the numbers at hand, Turkiye should not have a wheat shortage. Moreover, there are 3-4 months left for the new season of wheat harvest. Harvest is done in July. When you combine the stocks in the hands of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), the ships with the purchased wheat, especially the bread wheat, the products in the licensed warehouses, the goods in the hands of the farmers and the industrialists, we have to spend 3 months without any problems until the harvest season. Some people create an atmosphere of panic for no reason.”

Özdemir underlined that citizens are uneasy with “conspiracy theories” on food supply and added, “Turkiye will produce a brand new 17-18 million tonnes of wheat in the harvest season. The weather is good, it’s raining, maybe we will catch 20 million tonnes in harvest.”

“We will grow up and enter a new era. There are many reasons for us to get through these 3 months with ease instead of doubt and worry. The authorities should also share this with the public in a nice, clear and transparent way,” Özdemir concluded…
