Mustafa Özen: “Illegal construction is a threat in cherry orchards”

Stating that İzmir province is the first in Turkiye with a cherry production of nearly 90 thousand tonnes, İzmir Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Director Mustafa Özen emphasized that Kemalpaşa district ranks first with an annual cherry production of 60 thousand tonnes.

Sharing the knowledge that the first cherry harvest in the Northern Hemisphere is made in Kemalpaşa district of İzmir, Özen said, “There was no problem in any of the 90 sample studies I did before the harvest last year, which is a good thing. However, it is a bad thing that the number of illegal structures inside the cherry orchards is increasing day by day. This is something we should pay attention to.”

“Let’s not lose our cherry orchards and let’s give the price of the crops produced by our farmes at the value they deserve in exports. If we are to continue production, if we are to remain the first in cherry production in the country, we will remain thanks to our producers. I want you to fight the increasing illegal structures in cherry orchards,” Özen added.

“We make projects and give trainings to keep cherries healthy. In 2021, we provided 1 million 750 thousand TL support to cherry producers. As a state, as a producer and as an exporter, success will come if we achieve unity,” Özen concluded…
