MEHMET ALI ISIK: TURKIYE IS THE WORLD’S FOOD WAREHOUSE

“We expect our food exports to China, Japan and South Korea to exceed 1 billion dollars in the short term”

Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, said: “Türkiye is the world’s food warehouse. As Türkiye, we are strong players in the sectors of dried fruit, olive oil, olive oil, aquaculture, fresh fruit and vegetables, fruit and vegetable products, cereals, pulses, oil seeds, non-wood forest products. One of the major projects we have carried out to hike the exports of our food sectors is the TURQUALITY Projects supported by our Ministry of Trade with a target market orientation.”

“As Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB), we realised our first TURQUALITY Project for Japan, South Korea and China in the past period with the gathering of 5 food associations. Our food exports to Japan, which were 148 million dollars when we started our TURQUALITY Project, reached 291 million dollars at the end of 6 years. Our food exports to Japan soared by 97 per cent in this process. Our food exports to China progressed from 112 million dollars to 302 million dollars. We achieved 170 per cent development in the Chinese market,” he noted.

“The dried fruit sector is one of our first exporter sectors based almost entirely on domestic inputs and as of 2022, 1.6 billion dollars of income was obtained in return for 498 thousand tonnes of exports. In 2012, our export to the USA was 71 million dollars, while in 2022 it reached 126 million dollars. The main products of our sector are raisins, dried figs and dried apricots and our country is the world leader in the production and export of these products, “he added.

“The USA ranks first in our dried fig and dried apricot exports. While Türkiye’s dried fig exports to the USA were around 11 million dollars 10 years ago, 12,675 tonnes of dried figs were exported to the USA in 2022 and 30 million 758 thousand dollars of income was obtained in return. Of this amount, 11,607 tonnes of dried figs were exported by EIB and approximately 32 million dollars of revenue was obtained. While Türkiye’s dried apricot exports to the USA amounted to 12,351 tonnes in quantity and 70 million 781 thousand dollars in value, EİB exports amounted to 4,287 tonnes in quantity and approximately 24 million dollars in value,” he concluded…
