Işık: Problems in dried fig exports will be solved with common sense
In the 2023/24 season, exports of dried figs, the fruit of paradise, surged by 6 percent in value from 84.8 million dollars to 89.7 million dollars in the 2-month period. In terms of quantity, dried fig exports decreased by 12 percent from 22 thousand 895 tonnes to 20 thousand 126 tonnes. The 14 percent increase in the average export price of dried figs prevented the decrease in foreign exchange earnings.
Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association brought the Dried Fig Board together for the fourth time to evaluate the current developments in dried fig exports.
Stating that they attach great importance to the views of the sector, Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, said that the views emerging from the meetings they held with the sector representatives shed light on them and that they defended the interests of the sector more strongly in their meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Trade, the European Union and other interlocutors and also thanks to the views emerging from these meetings, the ground was prepared for more value-added export of dried figs.
Sharing the information that they exported more than 62 thousand tonnes of dried figs in the 11-month period of 2023, Işık said, “Our dried fig exports soared by 9 percent in value from 216 million dollars to 237 million dollars in 11 months. With the exports we will make in December, we will exceed 250 million dollars.”
In the dried fig export season that started on 6 October 2023 until 2 December 2023, the most dried fig exports were made to Germany with 12.5 million dollars.
