“LET THE SACRIFICIALS’ SKIN AND INTESTINES BE A GAIN TO THE ECONOMY”

Press release…

Nurullah Eskitütüncü, Member of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association (ASHİB), stated that one-third of the raw material need of the leather and intestine sector, which has reached an export value of 8 billion 540 million dollars in the last 5 years, is met from ovines and cattle slaughtered during the Sacrifice Feast (Eid al-Adha).

Eskitütüncü emphasized that the industry has suffered a great loss because the skins and intestines are not preserved in appropriate conditions because the Feast of Sacrifice coincides with the summer season.

Eskitütüncü said, ““According to statistics, approximately 2 million ovine animals and 600 thousand cattle are slaughtered every year on Eid al-Adha. However, 20 percent of the sacrifials’ skin and 50 percent of the intestines are wasted. That’s why the most effective way to preserve these products is the extremely simple and low-cost salting process.”

‘Our exports of intestines, leather and leather products are increasing year by year’

Evaluating Turkey’s performance in the export of intestines, leather and leather products, Eskitütüncü explained, “When we evaluate the export reports of the last five years, our sector’s exports in the intestinal (dried chirdens) sub-product group increase year by year. Our intestinal export, which was 44.3 million dollars in 2016, rose to 69.5 million dollars in 2020. In the first 5 months of 2021, we achieved an export value of 32.2 million dollars.”

“Unfortunately, the upward momentum we achieved in exports of leather and leather products was negatively affected in the year of the pandemic. Our leather and leather products exports, which were at the level of 1.39 billion dollars in 2016, reached 1.68 billion dollars in 2019. However, in 2020, this value amounted to 1.33 billion dollars. In the January-May period of 2021, we exported 640 million dollars in this product group. Our industry quickly compensates for its losses due to the pandemic,” Eskitütüncü added…
