Stating that the discovery of an antibiotic called carcinogenic nitrofurans in eggs exported from Türkiye to Taiwan, Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association Chair Bedri Girit said, “Very serious controls are carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry before egg export. The sale of this antibiotic has been illegal for over 20 years. As the industry, we demand that this antibiotic be investigated. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and technical friends in our sector are investigating the issue. When the issue is understood, we will make a public statement with full transparency.”

Underlining that the Turkish egg industry produces in modern facilities, Girit continued his words as follows; “We are one of the strongest players in the world, we are among the top three countries in the world in exports. As the Turkish egg industry, we exported 195 million 350 thousand dollars to 51 countries between the European Union countries and the United States in the first half of 2023. Taiwan is a country we export to for the first time in 2023. We are surprised to find the nitrofurans antibiotic group, which has been banned in Türkiye for 20 years, in a batch of eggs exported to Taiwan. We believe that this exceptional situation should not overshadow Türkiye’s success in egg exports.”

Pointing out that Türkiye exported 195 million 350 thousand dollars of eggs to 41 countries in the January-June period of 2023, Girit added, “While egg exports soared by 9 percent compared to the first half of 2022, the most exported country was the United Arab Emirates with 48 million dollars. Iraq demanded 40 million dollars worth of eggs from Türkiye.”

“Qatar ranked third with an egg import of 16.3 million dollars. While Turkish egg exporters exported 12.8 million dollars to the Russian Federation, Taiwan, where we exported eggs for the first time in 2023, entered the list at number five with an amount of 8.1 million dollars,” he concluded…
