Muğla and İzmir provinces realize 62 percent of the annual 1.4 billion dollars of fishery industry which is among the star sectors of Türkiye’s exports.
Explaining that they contributed 953 million dollars to 1.4 billion dollars of fisheries exports in 2021 as Aegean Region, Chair of the Sector Board of Turkish Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Associations, Sinan Kızıltan said, “We carry out 68 percent of the country’s aquaculture exports from our Aegean region. Fisheries exports, which were 59 million dollars at the beginning of the 2000s, reached 1 billion 578 million dollars when we look at the last 1-year period today. We’re on our way to 2 billion dollars.”
“While 31 provinces exported aquatic products in 2020, today, aquaculture exports are made from 37 provinces. Our exporters from Muğla, who contributed the most to our current success in our export of 1 billion 400 million dollars of fishery products in 2021, brought 521 million dollars to our country. Izmir’s share increased to 359 million dollars, while Istanbul’s share increased to 177 million dollars,” Kızıltan added.
Kızıltan explained, “In 2021, Muğla and İzmir provinces realized 62 percent of our total aquaculture exports with an export of 880 million dollars. Compared to 2020, Muğla ramped up its exports by 30 percent and İzmir by 25 percent. Our two provinces will exceed 1 billion dollars in a very short time with this potential. The amount of aquaculture products has been increasing rapidly in recent years.”
“Our country is the largest producer/exporter of Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream in the world. Our aquaculture sector took the lion’s share of 1 billion 57 million dollars in exports of 2 billion 695 million dollars of aquaculture and animal products in the January-August period of 2022. During this period, Muğla’s aquaculture exports reached 422 million dollars, while İzmir’s increased to 235 million dollars and Istanbul’s to 106 million dollars,” he concluded…
