İSMET ARAL: WE AIM TO PREVENT 3 BILLION DOLLARS OF FOOD WASTE IN TWO YEARS

Making a statement on food waste, İstanbul Commodity Exchange (İSTİB) Vice Chairman Hakkı İsmet Aral said that they aim to prevent 3 billion dollars of food waste in two years.

It began to speed up works against food wastage in Turkey.

Stating that Istanbul Commodity Exchange started its studies on food waste in March 2019 and for this purpose they established the Food Waste Prevention Commission, Aral said, “This commission has been working for about 1.5 years. Unfortunately one third of food is going to waste in Turkey as the same in the world.”

“UN wants every country to prevent food waste”

Aral reminded that the United Nations (UN) have been working to prevent food waste through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for 15 years and noted, “In the world, 1.3 trillion dollars, that is, 1.6 billion tonnes of food is wasted by throwing it away. After getting these figures from the UN and we looked at the situation in our country.”

“The UN indicates that the world cannot handle food waste. They want all countries to work on this issue. By 2050, the world population will be reaching to 9.8 billion. Besides food demand will increase 2 times. Our world can not put up with nearly 33 percent of food waste. Therefore, we must prevent this waste first,” Aral explained.

Pointing out that food waste is made as much as food exports in Turkey, Aral added, “What we are trying to do is to make clear that food waste is a very serious thing. Our aim is to prevent 2-3 billion dollars of food wastage with the actions we will take in two years.”

“In this context we have two phases, both food waste and food losses. After we finish the work on food waste, we will move on to food losses. This phase will start after 5 years. In the second phase, the Ministry of Agriculture must be got involved. Because the food loss occurs during the dismantling of crops, storage, disinfection, placing in silos, transportation and in the process leading up to the production place,” Aral concluded…
