Geographical Indication (GI) products, which are a strong source of income all over the world, are a great assurance for both producers and consumers. Geographically marked products, which are sold at an average of 2.2 times more expensive than their equivalents, are important in terms of regional promotion as well as their contribution to the country’s economy.
According to TÜRKPATENT data interpreted by Destek Patent; geographical indication applications increased by 120 percent in the first 6 months of 2022 compared to the same period last year. In this period, the most applications were made from Balıkesir, Hakkari and Malatya provinces, while Gaziantep, Diyarbakır and Konya were among the provinces with the most geographical indication registrations.
Geographical indication is a quality mark that shows and guarantees the source of the product, its characteristics and the connection between the said characteristics of the product and the geographical area. With geographical indication registration, it is ensured that products that have gained a certain reputation depending on their quality, traditionality, raw materials obtained from the region and local qualities are protected.
Therefore, this sign adds value both to the labour of the people of the region and to its promotion. Looking at Türkiye, the number of registered products reached 163 in the first half of 2022. In the same period, Gaziantep, Diyarbakır and Konya were among the provinces with the most geographical indication registered products.
