250 million dollars target in cherry exports!
The first cherry harvest of 2024 in Türkiye, the world leader in cherry production, was made a week earlier than in 2023 with the early arrival of spring.
The first cherry harvest of the Northern Hemisphere was held in the Şehzadeler district of Manisa province, home to 2.4 million of the country’s 22 million cherry trees. The first cherry harvested was sold at auction for a symbolic 2 thousand TL.
Hayrettin Uçak, Head of Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association (EYMSİB), stated that the cherry trees in Şehzadeler district of Manisa spent the flowering period very well and that the cherry trees gave fruit a week ago to break the export record in 2024 and that they aim to export 90-100 thousand tonnes of the 725 thousand tonnes of cherry yield and to bring 250 million dollars of foreign currency to the Turkish economy annually.
Underlining that Manisa and Izmir provinces are early cherry producing regions, Uçak said, “In 2023, the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we exported 83 thousand tonnes of cherries in return for 215 million dollars. We want to make a successful entry into the second century of our Republic.”
“We are by far the world leader in cherry production with a yield of 725 thousand tonnes and we are also among the top four countries in the world in exports. We aim to be among the top three countries in exports,” he added…
