Haluk Tezcan: Increase in wheat production will expand export markets

Haluk Tezcan, Head of Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TUSAF), said that the abundance of wheat production in Türkiye will mobilise the idle capacity and this will be beneficial in expanding the export markets and quantity.

Haluk Tezcan, who also evaluated the export figures in the first two months of this year, stated that especially the February data is quite remarkable. Tezcan, who informed that there was an increase of 20 percent in flour exports in the said period compared to the previous year and an increase of more than 60 percent in the last 10 years, said the following: “The sector ramped up its exports by 40 percent in February compared to the previous year and reached 322 thousand tonnes. With these increases on a monthly basis, we calculate that the export amount will reach 4 million tonnes in 2024.”

Pointing out that the formation of new markets and the spike in quantities in existing markets will also play a driving role in achieving this target, Tezcan explained, ” On the other hand, Türkiye’s largest export market has been Iraq by far for many years. Comparing the 2022 and 2023 seasons, we observe that the markets of Sudan and Sri Lanka are also included this season. In summary, we anticipate that wheat production, which has been on an upward trend in the last 2 years, especially with the high support given by the state to wheat production, will continue in the 2024 season.”

“With this boost in our raw material, we can say that idle capacity can be revitalised and new markets will be formed as a sector in the 2024 season,” Tezcan added…
