“FOCUSING ONLY ON HAZELNUT PRICES IS WRONG!”

In the new hazelnut export season 2021/2022, which started on September 1, 2021; hazelnut exports from Trabzon province reached 21,355 tonnes, with a foreign exchange inflow of 143 million 780 thousand 544 dollars in the last two months.

Mehmet Cirav, Chairperson of the Hazelnut and Products Sector Committee of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKİB), made evaluations on the subject; he stated that in the last 2 months of the 2021/2022 hazelnut export season, 21,355 tonnes of hazelnuts exported from Trabzon reached 143 million 780 thousand 544 dollars.

Cirav also said that after the crop was harvested this year, there were problems in drying because the weather conditions were not at the desired level and therefore the product arrived late on the market.

Pointing out that despite this, the increase in exports in the first 2 months of the season is satisfactory and they are hopeful that exports will continue to rise in the new season. Mehmet Cirav said, “Italy, Germany, Poland, People’s Republic of China and France are the most exported countries, meanwhile the highest increase was experienced in exports to Germany, Poland and China.”

Cirav noted that the rainy weather in the Eastern Black Sea Region this year has partially affected the sector, the upcoming period is much more important and the climate change that will be caused by the global warming problem in the world will inevitably lead to yield losses and production decreases in plant production.

He underlined that the perception that is tried to be created only based on price is wrong, that it should not be forgotten that the most important points for sustainable hazelnut production are to focus on the yield losses in hazelnut orchards due to neglect and what measures should be taken against the negativities to be caused by the approaching global warming.
