FISHERIES SECTOR EXPORTS OVER 1 BILLION DOLLARS DESPITE THE PANDEMIC…

Aquaculture industry takes firm steps forward to the 2023 export target of 1.5 billion dollars.

While there was a 7 percent contraction in world commodity trade in 2020 due to the pandemic, the Turkish seafood industry increased its exports by 4 percent to 1 billion 53 million dollars. While the Turkish fisheries industry achieved this success despite the pandemic, it reached the highest export figure in its history.

Although the fisheries sector fell to negative in exports in the second quarter of 2020 because of the pandemic, it was able to turn its exports from negative to positive, especially with its performance in the last quarter of the year.

Turkey Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters Industry Board Chairman Sinan Kızıltan, in his written statement, drew attention to the seafood which is extremely rich in Omega-3 in terms of strengthening the immune system of the human body.

Kızıltan said, “Turkish seafood industry, which has shown a great development especially after 2000, is taking firm steps towards its export target of 1.5 billion dollars in 2023 and that the pandemic cannot prevent this journey.”

Sea bass at peak, Black Sea salmon exports doubled…

Sharing the information that sea bass is the most exported Turkey’s fisheries product with 355.6 million dollars, Kızıltan noted, “Seabass showed a growth of 7 percent in exports. As for our bream exports, it reached to 311 million dollars with 8,6 percent increase. Trout gave a 3 percent increase and caught 120 million dollars. While tuna exports registered to 65.3 million dollars, we caught the biggest rise with Black sea salmon. It signed an export of 56.8 million dollars with 96 export growth rate. Besides we exported 6.3 million dollars of rock bass with an increase of 7.5 percent.”

The Netherlands became the country with the most exports…

“The Netherlands took the first place in Turkish fisheries exports with 133 million dollars, fisheries products exports to Russia increased by 49 percent and reached 132 million dollars. As for Italy, one of the countries worst hit by pandemic; we sent 129 million dollars worth of seafood products with an increase of 17 percent,” Kızıltan added.

“Greece takes the fourth place with the amount of 81 million dollars and UK ranks fifth with 74 million dollars in Turkey’s seafood exports. Japan and Germany took the 6th and 7th places on the list, with a demand of 73.6 million dollars for Turkish fish. We exported 43.3 million to Spain, 33.3 million dollars to the USA and 26 million dollars to Israel. Turkish seafood added flavour to the tables of billions of people in 93 countries,” Kızıltan concluded…
