Ferhat Gürüz: Our export unit prices soared!

Ferhat Gürüz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, announced that the Turkish fresh fruit and vegetable sector evaluated 4 million 670 thousand tonnes of products in international markets in 2023.

Ferhat Gürüz said that they have achieved new records by succeeding in exporting less products with higher prices on quantity basis. Evaluating Türkiye’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports according to product groups, Gürüz said, “In 2023, tangerine, tomato and lemon were the top three in the product groups we exported the most. We reached 576 million 686 thousand dollars with an increase of 24 percent in tangerine, 538 million 664 thousand dollars with an increase of 43 percent in tomato, and 354 million 819 thousand dollars with an increase of 30 percent in lemon. When we examine the product groups that we achieved the strongest increase in export volume in the period in question, cherry-cherries and onions take the lead. We exported 214 million 897 thousand dollars with an increase of 60 percent in cherry-cherries and 37 million 401 thousand dollars with an increase of 40 percent in onions.”

Stating that citrus, which is the most important product group in the country’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports, has a 32 percent share in the annual performance, Gürüz explained, “Our sector exported 1 million 949 thousand tonnes of citrus last year and earned 1 billion 112 million dollars in foreign currency to our country. We achieved a 23 percent hike in our citrus exports compared to the previous year. As an association, we carried out 70 percent of citrus exports alone. Turkish tangerines were in high demand in international markets and our export volume reached 1 million tonnes. We earned 576 million 686 thousand dollars with a rise of 24 percent in tangerine, 354 million 819 thousand dollars with a rise of 30 percent in lemon, 112 million 718 thousand dollars with a rise of 15 percent in orange and 67 million 664 thousand dollars in grapefruit. Our sector, which made a great attack in citrus exports, especially in December, reached 262 million 826 thousand dollars in this product group, while our orange exports rose by 78 percent and reached 38 million 921 thousand dollars. Thanks to the supports provided by our state in the season with high tonnage in citrus yield, we have already achieved a 28 percent spike.”
