Çukurova University Engineering Faculty Head of Environmental Engineering Department Professor Dr. Zeynep Zaimoğlu said that the effects of climate change will be seen very quickly.
Dr. Zaimoğlu said, “We could not get the rainfall needed for germination in wheat in Konya Plain this year, so wheat can no longer germinate in Konya Plain. This will come across very quickly as an effect on yield.”
Pointing out the importance of the effects of climate change especially on the agricultural sector, Dr. Zaimoğlu explained, “The effects of climate change on the agricultural sector are extremely fragile. There are main resources people need to live, one of them is air, the other is food, so the effects of climate change on agriculture cause food insecurity. In this case, we need to develop adaptation strategies very quickly in order to harmonize climate change with the food sector.”
“Let’s settle for what we have and put an end to food waste in some way.”
Indicating that some fruits and vegetables will therefore be less in the upcoming period and may be sold at high prices, Dr. Zaimoğlu added, “We will have serious problems with efficiency. For this, we always suggest, please let’s produce locally and consume locally as much as possible. At least, let’s not allow these foodstuffs to emit more carbon by traveling very long distances. Let’s end it anyway, because we no longer have such a luxury.”
