The increase in bush fires in the Aegean, Mediterranean and East-Southeast Anatolian Regions during the summer season draws attention. Ege University Environmental Problems Application and Research Centre Director Professor Dr. Dinçer Ayaz said, “Forests are the most important terrestrial ecosystems in terms of balance and harmony of life in the world. The areas they cover not only repair the environmental degradation brought about by urbanization, but also ensure the continuity of biological diversity within itself. However, forests face many dangers around the world. In addition to effects such as floods, erosion, soil loss, mining activities, timber trade, fires are the fastest destroyers of forests.”

Pointing out the causes of forest fires, Dr. Ayaz explained, “Forest fires can start due to negligence and carelessness, intention, natural events and unknown reasons. These reasons point to 99 percent of people.”

“Because not taking any precautions other than natural events such as lightning; Unexplained causes such as fire that cannot be extinguished after the picnic, butts, intentionally starting a fire or the lens effect of glass shards thrown into the environment, sparks from train tracks, are of human origin,” Dr. Ayaz added…
