DR. AHMET YILMAZ: SUPPORTS TO CERTIFIED SEED PRODUCERS MAKE NO PROGRESS SO FAR

Turkish Sub-Union of Seed Industrialists and Producers (TSÜAB) Chairman of the Board Dr. Ahmet Yılmaz, in his written statement, said that the studies of TSÜAB and the Sector Stakeholders on Certified Seed Usage Supports yielded positive results.

Dr. Yılmaz said, “But we expect improvements in the Certified Seed Production supports on behalf of the sector. A strong seed sector is essential for a strong crop production. We have not stopped expressing this on behalf of our 950 TSÜAB member company, which we represent as TSÜAB Board of Directors, on every platform and at every opportunity.”

Stating that everyone has seen what an important issue they emphasize during the pandemic process, Dr. Yılmaz noted, “Although seed is a strategic input of agriculture, it is also an agricultural product. However, the cost of certified seed production is higher than normal product manufacture. In the production of certified seeds, in addition to production costs, additional costs such as R&D studies, seed processing, labeling, certification processes increase the costs even more. In our negotiations with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, we expressed at every opportunity that the supports for certified seed production along with the use and support allocated to R&D should continue increasingly.”

Pointing out that in spite of the additional costs that have increased by more than 100 percent in recent years, Dr. Yılmaz explained, “The supports given to the seed have been increased for the first time since 2015. Although the increase in Certified Seed Use supports provides some relief, the supports provided to our Certified Seed Producing firms have made no progress so far.”

“As stated in the Seeding Law, Seed Supports should be specially arranged with a separate communiqué, Certified Seed Use and Production Supports should be continued and should be arranged according to 5-7 year plans,” Dr. Yılmaz added…
