Mentioning that bread is a member of the grain group, that is, foods such as bulghur, pasta, rice and bread are in the same group, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department Professor Dr. Murat Baş said, “We need to find an answer to the question of whether to stay away from bread or to prefer the one with high nutritional quality. White bread is not a good option for any of us, so I would like to draw attention to the importance of consuming quality breads instead of staying away from bread.”
Emphasizing that bread, which is considered one of the basic foods, is rich in many vitamins and minerals, Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Ayça Kaya, on the other hand, says, “Turkish people’s fondness for bread is evident when we look at world statistics. In Turkiye, where an average of 100 million breads are produced daily, the average bread waste rate per person is 93 kilograms every year.”
Pointing out that Turkiye is almost at the top with 150 kilograms of bread consumption per capita, Dr. Ayça Kaya added, “For example, Germany and Russia consume 90 and 80 kilos of bread. America and Mediterranean countries follow after these.”
BREAD CONSUMPTION DECREASED, OBESITY INCREASED…
“Bread consumption in our country has decreased gradually in the last 48 years. According to statistics, the average bread consumption per capita in our country in 1974 was 402 grams, in 1984 360 grams, in 2003 197 grams and in 2017 179 grams. However, although bread consumption has decreased by 55 percent in the last 50 years, obesity has increased by 110 percent,” Dr. Baş concluded…
