Izmir Metropolitan Municipality received the Geographical Indication Certificate from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for the local Çeşme melon. With Çeşme melon, the first registered product of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, producers returned to exciting days. Neptün Soyer, Chairwoman of İzmir Village Development Cooperatives Union (KöyKoop), Çeşme Mayor Ekrem Onan and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Ertuğrul Tugay also visited Çeşme’s melon producers at the harvest sites. Çeşme melon, which stands out with its taste and durability, will provide the producer with great advantages in marketing and will offer the opportunity to promote their products more in domestic and foreign markets thanks to the geographical indication.
“We are not talking about an ordinary melon”
Neptün Soyer, Chairwoman of İzmir Village Cooperatives Union, who participated in the harvest, said, “A product with a geographical indication must have a different way of marketing. The added value should be much higher. We are not talking about any ordinary melon. We are talking about an ancient culture of Anatolia.
A non-watered seed is used. There is an important point here that needs to be supported in the fight against the climate crisis. Therefore, we think that producers should be supported with government policies in terms of costs and expenses.”
