Canola, which has recently come to the forefront as an alternative crop that can reduce imports with its economic return and high oil capacity, has increased from 11 thousand decares to 90 thousand decares in Edirne province, becoming both a rival to sunflower and an alternative product.
In Edirne region, which meets Turkiye’s sunflower and wheat needs to a large extent, the interest in canola, which the farmers describe as more profitable, is increasing every year. The local farmer, who used the opportunity to plant canola in winter and harvest early, expanded the cultivation area of canola, which he saw as an alternative to sunflower during rotation. So the cultivation area of canola, which stands out as a competitor to sunflower oil, has boosted 9 times.
INCREASE REFLECTED TO TURKSTAT DATA…
The rise in interest in canola, which stands out as the strongest alternative to sunflower oil and is 50 percent oil, was reflected in the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute. According to the data of TURKSTAT Edirne Regional Directorate, 11 thousand decares of canola were planted in Edirne in 2017, while this figure reached 70 thousand decares in 2021. This year, it is expected to produce on an area of 90 thousand decares.
LESS RISKY COMPARED TO SUNFLOWER…
Edirne Chamber of Agriculture Chairperson Hüseyin Arabacı said that there has been an increase in canola cultivation compared to previous years. Explaining that canola reaches a certain level with the rains when it is planted in the winter months, Arabacı stated that canola is a less risky crop than sunflower and that the development of canola is progressing well at the moment.
