BAYRAKTAR: OUR FARMERS MUST GIVE UP STUBBLE BURNING!

Press release…

Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB) President Şemsi Bayraktar, in his written statement, said, “Stubble burning, which has never been an agricultural practice and paves way to serious damage to soil fertility in the long term, causes the loss of sustainable productivity in agricultural lands.”

Stating that the stubble fires that broke out of control caused the destruction of our farmers’ 1-year labor, Bayraktar continued his statement as follows: “All the labour and money of our producers are destroyed by a stubble fire. Burning stubble also pollutes the air and can cause forest fires. According to the records of the General Directorate of Forestry, 2 thousand 793 forest fires occurred in our country in 2021 and 5.9 percent of these fires or 165 fires were caused by burning stubble. Unfortunately, 377 hectares of the 139 thousand 503 hectares of forest area that burned in 2021 took place due to the stubble fire.”

“I would like to call out to our farmers who make every sacrifice to make agricultural production and feed our people. Let’s not burn the stubble on these hot summer days when forest fires intensify. Let’s protect our land, which is the main element of agricultural production. Let’s not ignore the harm that burning stubble will cause to the environment. Let’s not endanger the sustainability of agricultural production,” he added.
“In today’s world, where the costs of agricultural production have increased considerably and our need for food is more than ever, we do not have the luxury of jeopardizing agricultural production and our natural resources. With this awareness, both our citizens and our farmers have to be more sensitive,” he concluded…
