Ali Kopuz: We have twice the olive oil we need in the domestic market

Ali Kopuz, Chair of the Istanbul Commodity Exchange (ISTIB), stated that the expectation of yield and stock situation in olive oil shows that there is about twice as much oil as the need in the domestic market.

“For this reason, we believe that bulk exports of olive oil should be liberalised,” Kopuz said.

Ali Kopuz highlighted that olive oil is one of the most important agricultural products of Türkiye and that the country is an olive country with its olive trees and especially its high potential. Indicating that there is a strong sector producing very high quality olive oil in the country, Kopuz argued that despite this, Turkish olive oil brands have not yet been able to make a presence in the global market.

Yield and stock situation…

Pointing out that olive oil consumption in the domestic market is not at the desired amounts, Kopuz noted, “Bulk olive oil was banned, taking into account the yield and stock situation. In this way, both the domestic market was successfully regulated and our boxed olive oil exports doubled compared to the previous season.”

“However, the new crop expectation and stocks show us that we have approximately twice as much olive oil as we need in the domestic market. For this reason, we believe that bulk exports of olive oil should be liberalised,” Kopuz added…
