AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISE TYPOLOGIES TO BE DETERMINED IN TURKIYE…

Agricultural enterprise typologies in the livestock sector in Türkiye will be determined in cooperation with FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The project aims to develop the technical capacity of the relevant units of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in order to improve more effective policies for the livestock sector by determining the operating typologies of livestock farms.

The opening of the 24-month Technical Cooperation Project titled “Support for the Determination of the Typology of Agricultural Enterprises Engaged in Livestock Activities in Türkiye”, aiming at the development of the livestock sector in the country, in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Livestock was held in Ankara.

The main objective of the project is to develop the technical capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for more effective policies for the livestock sector by systematically classifying the typologies of the existing livestock farms and collecting and processing up-to-date data on the enterprises.

The workshop started with the opening speech of Ayşegül Selışık, FAO Deputy Representative for Türkiye. Underlining that the livestock sector in the country is facing a series of challenges, Selışık said, “It is very important for decision makers and stakeholders in the sector to access up-to-date, holistic and objective data so that the livestock sector can develop resistance against current problems by focusing on women and youth. From this point of view, FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry developed and implemented this joint project in order to contribute to the strengthening of the livestock sector in Türkiye.”

After the speech of Selışık, the start-up workshop continued with the speech of Öner Özbey, Head of Bovine and Ovine Livestock Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Livestock. Referring to the success of the projects carried out in cooperation with FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Özbey said, “We see that the Women’s Embroidery in Merinos Project carried out in 2022 has also produced good results for women’s cooperatives.” Emphasizing the importance of the outputs of the new project, Özbey stated that it will contribute greatly to the expected sectoral transformation on the way to sustainable livestock.

After the opening speeches, FAO Project Technical Leader Eran Raizman shared valuable information about the aim of the workshop and the concept of the project, pointing out that the Ministry’s knowledge in the livestock sector is key for this technical cooperation project. The concept presentation of Yunus Arzık, Assistant Technical Specialist from FAO Türkiye Country Office, on the status of animal husbandry typology in the world and good practice examples was shared with the participants.

After Arzık’s presentation, Head of Department Öner Özbey made a sectoral presentation on the latest developments in the light of the available data on animal husbandry in our country. After the question and answer session, the workshop ended with the closing speeches of FAO Senior Program Coordinator Özcan Türkoğlu and Balıkesir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Erkan Alkan.

The workshop brought together relevant stakeholders at the center and local level to discuss sub-activities related to the project’s objectives and initiate field studies, providing a platform for technical cooperation, sharing of knowledge and experience and seeking sectoral planning in line with business typologies.
