Harvesting Karakılçık Wheat in Beydağ…

Mayor of Beydağ (a district of Izmir province) Feridun Yılmazlar made the first attempt to spread the characteristic wheat grain, which is 2 thousand years old, in the district and made the first harvest of the planted ancestral Karakılçık wheat.

“We will produce our own wheat by ourselves”

Beydağ Municipality made the first harvest of wheat sown with 2 thousand years old ancestral seeds. Stating that they carried out this project, not farming, just in order to set an example and to encourage farmers, Beydağ Mayor Feridun Yılmazlar said, “We have also implemented the project of spreading the ancestral seed Karakılçık wheat that was initiated by our Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Mr. Tunç Soyer during the Seferihisar Municipality. Our aim here is to realize the cultivation and dissemination of our genetically unchanged healthy ancestral seeds throughout our district with this project. After reproducing these seeds, we will produce and spread projects to our local people who are engaged in agriculture throughout our district. Now, by producing our own wheat ourselves, we will make our bread from the wheat we have grown as before and contribute to our economy.”

Feridun Yılmazlar added, “Now, instead of seeds that will negatively affect our health, we will use our Karakılçık seeds known as ancestral seeds. We will try to spread our local seeds to the general public as soon as possible. In addition, our fellow countrymen will make their own breads in those bakeries with our wheat grown with our ‘A Bakery for Every Village’ project, which we have now started.”
